Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is considering the option of running as a Libertarian in the 2024 election, his second party swap in the last year.

During an appearance on CNN, RFK Jr. was asked if he was going to be able to get on all 50 states’ ballots due to his running as an independent. Kennedy emphasized that he “won’t have any problem getting on the ballot,” although he is still in the process of getting onto several states’ election listings. He was then asked if he would seek to be the Libertarian Party‘s candidate, a position that would enable him to appear on all 50 states’ ballots without extra effort by Kennedy’s team.

Kennedy said his team is “looking at” the option, noting that they have a good relationship with the party and that he’s speaking at the California Libertarian Party Convention. He wasn’t willing to commit to whether or not he would join the party but said they were on good terms.

Kennedy initially ran as a Democrat, presenting himself as an alternative to President Joe Biden, despite his promotion of political policies that resonate more with Republican voters. He later switched to independent in October, emphasizing that he was leading a “populist movement that defies left-right division” and that he intended to shake up the status quo for both parties in time.

Kennedy filed to make a new “We the People” party in mid-January, intending to do so in order to reduce the number of signatures it would take for Kennedy to get on the ballots of all 50 states. He now needs about 330,000 signatures in order to appear in every state. As of Saturday, Kennedy only has his name verified on Utah’s ballot.
