Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-TX) said she was “not happy” over President Joe Biden‘s comments that he would “shut down” the border if a bipartisan border bill passes through Congress.

Escobar, who serves as a national co-chair for Biden’s reelection campaign, told Politico that she is “fully, completely, absolutely behind him” and that while they do not always agree on every matter, she was upset over Biden’s comments on the border.

“I was not happy. That’s absolutely not language or terminology that I would use. Not today, not ever,” Escobar told the outlet.

“I am a huge supporter of the president’s. When he called and asked me to serve as his national co-chair, I was so honored. I feel it is such a privilege and I think he’s one of the best presidents we have ever had,” she added. “And I am fully, completely, absolutely behind him and will do everything I can to make sure he gets reelected. Does that mean I agree with him on everything? I don’t. There’s no two people who agree completely with one another, even in the most harmonious relationships, marriages, friendships, etc.”

When asked if she would support the proposed bill being negotiated in the Senate, Escobar said she had not seen the details but had “certain red lines” that would prevent her from supporting the bill. She told the outlet that rapid expulsion is one of her red lines and that she would likely not support the bill.

“It would be very hard for me to support it,” Escobar said, while touting her own proposed bill regarding the border.

The text of the Senate’s proposed border security bill is expected to be released on Sunday, with House Republicans vowing not to take up the legislation over reported details in the bill.

Immigration and border security has been a key issue for Republicans in recent elections, but Biden’s willingness to work on the proposed Senate bill has created backlash from some Republicans and Democrats.
