Fitness personality Jillian Michaels stated Sunday that the reason she left California was because Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) “didn’t follow his own rules,” citing the state’s high level of crime.
Michaels, known for her role in the fitness reality show The Biggest Loser and on The Doctors, said she left Malibu, California, for Miami because the latter’s state of Florida is “less crazy.” She explained that when she lived in California, she had her house broken into by a criminal who was released from prison by Newsom.
“Long story, but third strike, guy goes to jail, gets let out during COVID,” Michaels said on late-night host Bill Maher’s podcast. “I mean, give me a f***ing break!”
Michaels also took issue with Newsom’s handling of COVID-19 precautions and cited a visit Newsom made to a French restaurant with other people while not wearing a mask, breaking his own COVID-19 safety protocols. Michaels called Newsom “a hypocrite” and his COVID-19 protocols “absurd.”
“He didn’t follow his own rules,” Michaels said. “If you’re going to be a leader, you lead by example.”
Maher also revealed that leaving California, where he has lived since 1983, to move to Florida is something he has considered doing but would ultimately never do.

Michaels has been no stranger to making candid comments, as she generated controversy in late 2019 when she spoke out against glorifying obesity in an interview. She stated that while being inclusive was important, glorifying obesity should not be part of that, adding that people have become “so politically correct that no one wants to say it.”
The fitness personality is part of a growing number of celebrities who have migrated from California to other states, with others including Superman actor Dean Cain, Dawson’s Creek star James Van Der Beek, and comedian Rob Schneider. Cain left the Golden State for Nevada because of California’s “terrible” policies, while Van Der Beek moved to Texas.
