President Joe Biden garnered an audience for his Thursday State of the Union speech that was 18% bigger than last year’s.
Nielson’s Ratings released Friday revealed 32.2 million viewers tuned in to listen to the president’s speech. This was a 5 million person increase from the year before across all 14 television networks, including cable. Fox News came out on top among its competitors as it brought in 5.6 million viewers, which was over a million more than the second-place network MSNBC with 4.2 million. This was Fox News’s third consecutive year of reporting the most viewers.
While almost 75% of viewers were over the age of 55, Fox News had over a million viewers within the 25-54 demographic. The other networks weren’t able to break a million in this demographic, with both CNN and MSNBC reporting around 600,000.

The White House also streamed Biden’s speech on YouTube, to the tune of over 1.5 million viewers in English and a Spanish subtitled version. Its account on the social media platform reports just over 2 million subscribers.
Biden is notably up for reelection this year and made frequent criticisms of his “predecessor,” in reference to former President Donald Trump, who is the presumptive Republican nominee for president.
