MSNBC’s Symone Sanders got married in Washington D.C., Friday afternoon, in a surprise to even some of the guests, who thought they were attending an engagement party.

Sanders previously worked on President Joe Biden’s campaign and later became the chief spokesperson for Vice President Kamala Harris, a position she left in December. Her husband, Shawn Townsend, was the former director of the D.C. Mayor’s Office of Nightlife and Culture.

She and Townsend had been engaged for a year and had reportedly planned to tie the knot in Mexico this summer. However, it seems they changed their minds.

According to People, the two exchanged vows in front of about 100 friends and family members — many of whom weren’t aware they were at a wedding.

“To put it simply, you’re the best man I know,” Sanders said of Townsend. “I’m very grateful just for everything that you are. You have always just been the most thorough person. You are so kind. You are so loving.”

CNN’s Abby Phillip and MSNBC’s Catherine Snyder were reported to be in attendance. Snyder is an executive producer of Sanders’s program, Symone.

Speculation has swirled about Harris’s rapport with staff as she continues to lose staffers roughly a year and a half into the Biden administration.

Rohini Kosoglu, a domestic policy adviser to Harris, is departing, and Meghan Groob, Harris’s director of speechwriting, was said to be leaving in the latest reporting this month on staff turnover.
