Milwaukee Alderwoman Chantia Lewis is pleading guilty to one felony and offering no contest to other charges of misconduct in public office, according to new reports.
Lewis was removed from public office Monday after pleading guilty to misconduct in public office and offering no contest for unlawful use of campaign finance, the latter in an alleged attempt to evade civil lawsuits. The Milwaukee County district attorney is suggesting multiple years in jail while the judge deliberates whether to hand down the maximum penalty of 3.5 years in jail and a $10,000 fine for each felony.

In September 2021, charges were filed against Lewis alleging embezzlement, theft, and unlawful campaign finance disbursement concerning activities from April 2016 to July 2020. The 42-year-old alderwoman rejected the claims against her.
“I am innocent of any criminal wrongdoing,” Lewis said when the allegations were first made, insisting she was cooperating with the investigation.
Lewis illegally used funds to pay for family trips to Georgia and Wisconsin, according to the complaint. While in Wisconsin, she made three withdrawals from her campaign funds during a shopping trip at a local mall, and she used campaign funds to help pay student loans at Agape Love Bible College, an automobile loan, a personal credit card bill, car repair bills, and Las Vegas hotel expenses, officials said.

The alderwoman was first elected to the 9th District in 2016 and reelected in 2020. Now, the “New Ninth,” as Lewis branded it in her campaign, will be hosting a special election after the general elections in November to replace her.
Lewis faces an Aug. 24 sentencing hearing.
