Zelensky Vogue feature prompts both backlash and praise on social media

Twitter users shared their thoughts on Ukrainian first couple Volodymyr Zelensky and Olena Zelenska’s feature in Vogue amid their country’s war with Russia.

“For Vogue’s special digital cover story, Zelenska and her husband Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke about life in wartime, their marriage and shared history, and their dreams for Ukraine’s future,” the magazine tweeted Tuesday. “As the war in Ukraine enters a critical new phase, the country’s First Lady, Olena Zelenska, has become a key player — a frontline diplomat and the face of her nation’s emotional toll.”

“These people think we are nothing but a bunch of suckers,” Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) tweeted.

“Wartime vogue photo shoots. very serious,” digital strategist Logan Hall tweeted. “Let’s keep sending Ukraine weekly billion dollar aid packages to protect ‘democracy.’ Don’t question it.”

“Why did we send $54 billion to Ukraine, so Zelensky & his wife could pose for Vogue?” activist Scott Presler tweeted. “You’re at war & you’ve got time for photo shoots?”

“Ordinary Ukrainians are dying every single day in a war they can’t win while Zelenskyy is busy doing photoshoots for Vogue, accusing his top government officials of treason, and sitting on his mountain of cash from the U.S. government,” digital strategist Greg Price tweeted Wednesday. “This is the same thing that has happened in every endless war: Ordinary people suffer while transnational elites get rich. It’s all a giant scam.”

Others appreciated the first lady’s insight into the conflict.

“An outstanding profile. [Zelenska] has done an incredible job representing her people, ensuring the world knows the story of women and children of Ukraine — and continuing to give voice to the many in need,” senior Verizon adviser Tami Erwin tweeted.

Zelensky and his wife have been married for nearly 20 years, beginning when he worked as a comedy writer.
