It’s not New York City, Chicago, or Los Angeles. But rather the U.S. city with the highest per capita murder rate is New Orleans, followed by Baltimore, Maryland, and Birmingham, Alabama, according to a new survey.

Police records from cities with populations over 200,000 revealed a surprising result in the murder rates of the top 31 cities. New York and Los Angeles are near the bottom of the list, while Chicago is in the middle. The data were compiled by AH Analytics from Jan. 1 through June 20 of this year.

In the city here, the old saying “Let the good times roll” has given way to a new municipal maxim: “Wash your hands.” A month ago the city was awash in people and steeped in its annual tradition of communal joy — the Mardi Gras season. But now New Orleans has joined those places shutting down bars, eliminating restaurant dining and banning crowds. (AP Photo/Rusty Costanza, File)

“I think … you can see a trend in increased violence across our country as a whole,” Alabama State Fraternal Order of Police President Everett Johnson told Fox News. “Birmingham, just based off the per capita [murders], I think that falls in line with what’s going on with the rest of our country … for the past two or three years.”

Surging crime and a “defund the police” mindset have spurred violence throughout the country. The Council on Criminal Justice reported that murders in the first half of the year are 39% higher than in the same period in 2019. Robberies are up 19%, and assaults are up 4%.

With 145 murders, New Orleans had a per capita rate of 36.8, which is far above second place city Baltimore, which had 174 murders at 29.1 per capita. Although Chicago had the highest murder of murders at 304, the per capita rate was the lowest on the list at 11.3.

New Orleans has seen its crime numbers increase over the years to where its murder rate is now ninth in the world for major cities not at war, the Citizen Council for Public Security and Criminal Justice reported.

Other cities near the top of the list are St. Louis, Milwaukee, Cleveland, and Rochester, New York.
