Protesters marched to Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito’s house Monday evening to voice opposition to a leaked opinion that would overturn Roe v. Wade.
Masses of people, rallied by ShutDownDC, gathered at 7:30 p.m. in Alexandria, Virginia, for a “vigil for abortion rights,” according to the group’s website.
“Justice Alito’s draft opinion that would overturn Roe v. Wade is beyond alarming,” the group wrote on its website, pointing out that it could lead to “contraception, same-sex marriage, protection for LGBTQ folks, and even interracial marriage” being outlawed.
SUPREME COURT MAJORITY STILL ON TRACK TO OVERTURN ROE DESPITE JOHN ROBERTS
The plan for the demonstrators was to meet at a “nearby location” and walk to Alito’s house, where they then lit candles and heard from various speakers, according to the group’s website.
“The overturning has nothing to do with children or protecting life and everything to do with control, misogyny, patriarchy, and sexism,” a woman who introduced herself as Kelly could be heard telling the crowd.
Kelly argued overturning Roe is “not only a threat to abortion and the right to choose” but a threat to “contraception such as birth control, [IUDs], plan B, LGBTQ+ rights and same-sex marriage.”
Other speakers at the event highlighted the complications of going forward with full-term pregnancies, compared to abortions, and how a large majority of people in the United States are in favor of abortion rights.
“Seventy percent of Americans believe abortion should be legal, 90% agree that abortion should be available when the pregnant person’s health is in danger, [and] 75% agree that it should be legal in cases of rape or serious birth defects. So it’s high time Congress listened to the people who elected to them and pay their f****** salaries,” a speaker identified as Lauren could be heard telling the crowd.

Demonstrations both for and against abortion have popped up around the country after Politico obtained and published a leaked draft majority opinion last week. The opinion was authored by Alito in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization Mississippi abortion case and would overturn prior rulings enshrining abortion access at the federal level.
The protest outside Alito’s house comes after rumors surfaced that he was taken to an undisclosed location in light of several protests that occurred over the weekend outside the homes of Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
