The victim was was one of 25 people camping in the area of Sveasletta, which is located 500 miles north of Norway’s mainland.
Authorities responded to a report of a polar bear attack that arrived around 8:30 a.m., according to Chief Superintendent Stein Olav Bredli.
Officials reached the injured woman by helicopter, Bredli said.
“The French woman suffered injuries to an arm,” he said. “Shots were fired at the polar bear, which was scared away from the area.”
The victim received treatment at a hospital in Longyearbyen, according to a report.
