Election Day is in five days, and 55 million people have already voted by mail or in person during early voting. According to data collected by the University of Florida Election Lab, 65.6 million mail ballots were requested and 25.9 million mail ballots have already been returned.

Each ballot receives an “Intelligent Mail” barcode, which is a specific set of numbers the U.S. Postal Service uses to track ballots. In some cases, the tracking technology can give detailed explanations of where the ballot is, but some states only offer confirmation that the ballot has been accepted at the election office.

However, ballot tracking doesn’t come automatically, so logging in with your basic voter identification is vital to accessing ballots’ locations.

If ballot tracking isn’t available, calling your local election office is an alternative method to confirming your ballot’s acceptance. The National Hotline 866-OUR-VOTE (866-687-8683) is another resource for more voting information.

For everyone looking to make sure their mail-in ballot gets to its election office safely, here’s how to track your ballot.
