Mark your calendars.

Mark your calendars.

The final supermoon of 2022 will be visible Thursday.

People can watch the Sturgeon Supermoon during its peak illumination at 9:36 p.m., per the Old Farmer’s Almanac. NASA says the moon is also called the “Green Corn Moon, the Raksha Bandhan Festival Moon, Nikini Poya, the end of the Esala Perahera Festival, and the Tu B’Av Holiday Moon.”

A supermoon indicates that the full moon is within 90% of perigee of Earth, its closest proximity. There have been three other supermoons in a row, with the Buck moon in July, the Strawberry moon in June, and the Flower moon in May. The Sturgeron Supermoon is the “third closest full moon of the year.”

This supermoon is special because it is the final supermoon predicted for 2022, and the next is not expected until nearly a year from now.

“Different publications use slightly different thresholds for deciding when a full moon is close enough to the Earth to qualify as a supermoon,” according to NASA. “Because the orbit of the moon is not a perfect circle, the moon is sometimes closer to the Earth than at other times during its orbit.”

Another astronomical event will be visible over the weekend as well. The annual Perseids meteor shower, which takes place from July to September, will be at its peak between Friday and Saturday. NASA, however, says the supermoon may make it difficult to view the shower.
