The leader of El Salvador chided the FBI’s raid on Mar-a-Lago, rhetorically asking what the United States would say if he did something similar.

President Nayib Bukele took to Twitter to point out the apparent hypocrisy of the U.S. government, sharing an article describing the FBI’s search of former President Donald Trump’s Florida residence on Monday.

“What would the US Government say, if OUR police raided the house of one of the main possible contenders of OUR 2024 presidential election?” Bukele tweeted with a thinking face emoji.

Trump has also decried the raid, which reportedly was part of an investigation into documents and the handling of classified information, describing it as a mark of “dark and dangerous times for America.”

The anti-establishment Bukele has often been compared to Trump, in part due to his bombastic personality, populist rhetoric, and humorous use of social media. Like Trump, he has also been embroiled in a public feud with the Biden administration — in Bukele’s case, since May 2021, when Washington accused several members of Bukele’s Cabinet of corruption, according to Americas Quarterly.

Bukele responded to the accusations with fury on Twitter, sarcastically referring to Washington as El Salvador’s “friends,” accusing the U.S. of unfairly slandering him while ignoring true corruption.

“The agenda is clear: The ‘Dictator’ thing didn’t work for them, on the contrary, people laughed at that absurd idea. Now they come with another agenda, but they make the VERY SERIOUS MISTAKE of protecting those who all the people know are the most corrupt in our history,” he tweeted.

“Look at the names of those who publish it, those who promote it, the media that take it up again, those that share it, they are the same, the henchmen of George Soros. We already know his manual and we already know how to beat it,” he wrote with a kissy face emoji, referring to liberal billionaire George Soros.

The Treasury Department has since sanctioned several members of Bukele’s Cabinet and repeatedly criticized him for allegedly undermining democratic institutions and the rule of law. At one point, Bukele put “dictator” as his job title on Twitter in response to one U.S. criticism.

Bukele is “enormously popular,” according to Americas Quarterly, due to his populist rhetoric, notable response to COVID-19, and a massive reduction in homicides and gang violence under his tenure.
