Two people were shot in Washington, D.C., on Thursday evening near Dupont Circle, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

Two people were shot in Washington, D.C., on Thursday evening near Dupont Circle, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

One of the victims, a man, was pronounced dead at the scene, per police. The other victim was transported to a nearby hospital and is in critical but stable condition, police said during a press conference.

The motive for the shooting was not immediately clear, but police said they believe one or more assailants in a silver vehicle had fired the shots. Officers were in the area around 9:30 p.m. local time when the shooting took place and were able to arrive on the scene quickly, according to police.

Authorities believe the silver car fled the scene traveling east and are asking the public for help identifying the driver.

Witnesses in the area claimed to hear a rapid succession of loud bangs followed by a swarm of police vehicles, about a dozen of which were on the scene after the shooting.

Sofia Tuomala, who lives near the site of the shooting, was walking nearby when the gunfire rang out. She told the Washington Examiner she saw one of the victims heading into Assets, a boutique nightclub in the area. The other victim was walking nearby when the shooting took place.

“It’s terrifying because this is a neighborhood full of children. It’s a neighborhood that is full of families, and we just [take] pride in our safety here. And the fact that now it just isn’t as safe as we were hoping for … it’s definitely a big [downturn] for us,” she said.
