President-elect Donald Trump condemned ex-special counsel Jack Smith after his resignation, saying he “Accomplished nothing.”
After roughly two years at the agency, Smith resigned from the Justice Department on Saturday. He led multiple criminal investigations into Trump, making him a visible rival of the president-elect.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump incorrectly said that the DOJ had fired Smith.
VIVEK RAMASWAMY SAYS FEDERAL AGENCIES CAN BE ‘DELETED.’ CAN TRUMP DO THAT?
“Deranged Jack Smith was fired today by the DOJ. He is a disgrace to himself, his family, and his Country. After spending over $100,000,000 on the Witch Hunt against TRUMP, he left town empty handed!” Trump wrote.
He went a step further in another post hours later.
“The Stench of Deranged Jack Smith and his thugs is GONE,” Trump said. “They were sent packing after spending over $100,000,000, destroying the lives of many people and families, who will never be the same again. Deranged Jack accomplished nothing, except to show what complete losers my political opponents are!!!”
Smith led two of the most high-profile indictments against Trump, investigating his alleged mishandling of classified documents and actions around the Jan. 6, 2021, riot. The investigations were terminated soon after Trump’s Nov. 5 victory.
Smith had indicated soon after the investigations’ dismissals that he would resign before Trump took office.

Attorney General Merrick Garland is looking to release Smith’s Jan. 6 report sometime before Trump takes office, but he decided against releasing the report on the investigation into the alleged mishandling of classified documents. Smith handed over his final reports on Tuesday.
The former special prosecutor had become one of Trump’s biggest targets during his prosecutions, with the now-president-elect repeatedly excoriating him in speeches, over social media, and at rallies.
