McConnell, who was first elected in 1984, announced last week he would not run for another term. In a new video posted to X on Monday, Cameron described himself as an “America First” lawmaker who would back President Donald Trump’s agenda, taking a moment to knock McConnell’s “flat-out wrong” decision not to vote for several nominees for Trump’s Cabinet.
“Now I’m not just saying these things, you know my track record because as attorney general, I was fighting for your Constitutional rights,” Cameron argued. “I was the first attorney general in the nation to stand up and oppose ESG, and I’ve been a vocal opponent of DEI.”

Cameron added that he was the first Kentucky officeholder to support Trump’s bid for reelection, as he believes in the president’s “America First agenda” for the nation.
Last year, Cameron told the Washington Examiner that he and his wife would pray about him possibly running in the 2026 Senate race, adding that he was “grateful” for the service that McConnell and other senators perform. Cameron previously sought the Kentucky governor’s mansion in 2023 but lost to incumbent Gov. Andy Beshear (D-KY).

Meanwhile, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) has also hinted at having interest in McConnell’s seat, posting a poll on X if he should run for Senate in 2026, run for Kentucky governor in 2027, or stay in the House. A total of 116,700 users partook in the poll, with over 67% recommending the lawmaker run for the Senate.

Beshear has ruled out a run for McConnell’s seat. His spokesperson has stated that the governor is satisfied with his current role and intends to finish his four-year term. The governor was also considered by many to be a possible candidate for former Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate in the 2024 election.
