Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) feuded with CNN’s John Berman over the Trump administration’s decision to ignore a judge’s decision to review President Donald Trump’s use of the Alien Enemies Act of 1798, during which Burchett questioned why the network was siding with “a bunch of murderers.”
The Trump administration has defended its stance on using the Alien Enemies Act, which comes after United States District Judge James Boasberg temporarily blocked the administration from using it to deport illegal immigrant gangs like Tren de Aragua. When asked about Burchett’s take on what the Constitution says about the judge’s responsibility on federal law, the lawmaker pointed to how the “activist” judge is from the District of Columbia, and that Trump is in the right to use this act.
“I think it‘s a political overreach by the Left, and that‘s why you‘re not seeing, that‘s why you‘re not seeing a lot of members of Congress on the Left that are trying to stand up and say something,” Burchett stated.
Burchett was then asked if he had evidence Boasberg was “unlawfully” confirmed by the Senate, to which he said he did not but did have proof those getting deported are criminals. The lawmaker then lamented why CNN “takes the side of a bunch of murderers,” which he deemed “nonsense.”
The lawmaker added that he believes both Trump and the White House have a duty to protect the United States from illegal immigrants, which is why people “overwhelmingly” support this stance and believe the judge is “overstepping his bounds.” When Burchett claimed that Boasberg is siding with “criminals,” Berman contended the judge has only put a stay on the White House’s action to review it, prompting Burchett to interrupt and state “come on.”
“Listen, these guys, the difference between God and these judges is God knows he‘s not one of these judges,” Burchett argued. “They‘re arrogant. They practice this type of thing all the time, and if you had a conservative one doing it, you all would be raising total hell, but because it’s a left-winger, and at CNN, you all take that side. It’s ridiculous that you all would take the side of a bunch of murderers.”

Burchett also feuded with CNN earlier this year with then-anchor Jim Acosta over Trump’s pardons of over 1,500 Jan. 6 defendants.
On Truth Social, Trump slammed Boasberg for being “a troublemaker and agitator” who was appointed by former President Barack Obama, and argued the judge was not elected by voters. He added that he is ”just doing what the VOTERS wanted me to do” as president, and urged for Boasberg to be impeached.
