A 5-year-old died as a result of being left in a hot car outside a Texas school Thursday.

The temperature was at 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit when the boy was discovered unconscious in the Dr. Americo Peredes Elementary School parking lot. It was the first week of school, and deputies from the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the scene after 4 p.m.

“Upon arrival, Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office Deputies made contact with the La Joya ISD Police Department who stated that a 5 year old male was discovered in a vehicle, unconscious and not breathing,” the office’s Facebook post read. “EMS arrived on scene and determined the child was deceased. This case remains under investigation at this time.”

It continues to be an active investigation, the sheriff’s office said, and deputies are soliciting tips at 956-383-8114 or, if people wish to provide them anonymously, via the Hidalgo County Crime Stoppers Hotline at 956-668-8477 or the smartphone application “P3 TIPS.”

This case involves the 19th child to die in a hot car in the United States this year, according to Kids and Car Safety, with Texas seeing four similar cases this year. That makes the state the first in the nation for hot car deaths.
