Former NBA coach and current TV analyst Stan Van Gundy is facing backlash after comparing President Joe Biden’s student loan forgiveness program to the biblical miracle of Jesus multiplying loaves and fish.
In endeavoring to mock conservative critics, the former head coach for the Detroit Pistons and New Orleans Pelicans posted a biblical meme to Twitter, captioning a classical painting of Jesus’s miracle that fed 5,000 people with five loaves of bread and two fish “Republican logic.”

The tweet was seemingly meant to slam those who have blasted the debt cancellation plan, whereby $10,000 worth of federal student loans would be forgiven from borrowers with less than $125,000 in annual income using taxpayer money. In the plan, Biden also set out to forgive $20,000 for borrowers who have Pell grants while extending the moratorium on federal student loan payments to Dec. 31.
However, conservatives quickly pushed back against Van Gundy’s tweet.
Conservative radio host Joe Cunningham blasted Van Gundy’s awareness, calling the tweet “ignorant of the issue AND of Christianity.”
Noam Blum, a conservative commentator, pointed to the difference between Jesus’s miracle and debt forgiveness.
“Where did the loaves and fishes come from, Stan?” Blum responded.

First Amendment attorney Casey Mattox also tweeted a response, calling out Van Gundy’s ignorance.
“I don’t think some basketball coaches have a fully formed understanding of political science or the Bible,” Mattox wrote.
