Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has emerged as the latest subject of interest for the Jan. 6 committee.
Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-MS) revealed on Thursday that the panel sent Gingrich a letter requesting a transcribed interview to provide information for the investigation into the Capitol riot and efforts to overturn the 2020 election results.
“Information obtained by the Select Committee shows that Mr. Gingrich was in contact with senior advisors to President Trump regarding television advertisements that relied upon and amplified known false claims about fraud in the 2020 election and that Mr. Gingrich was involved in various other aspects of the scheme to overturn the 2020 election and block the transfer of power, including after the violence of January 6th,” reads a press release from the committee.

Gingrich was in contact with former President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and White House adviser Jared Kushner and former Trump spokesman Jason Miller, with whom he had provided input into television advertisements that “repeated and relied upon false claims” about the 2020 election, according to the letter. The committee also said Gingrich continued to try and overturn the election results even after the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, claiming he had emailed Mark Meadows, Trump’s White House chief of staff, and asked, “Are there letters from state legislators about decertifying electors[?]”
The committee seeks “a voluntary transcribed interview” during the week of Sept. 19 and has offered its staff to talk to Gingrich’s lawyer if he is represented by one.
“A full and accurate accounting of what happened on January 6th is critical to the Select Committee’s legislative recommendations,” the letter from Thompson concludes. “And the American people deserve to understand the relevant details of what led to the attack.”

In January, Gingrich suggested that if the GOP wins back the House in the 2022 midterm elections, the Jan. 6 committee “is all going to come crashing down.” He also told Fox News that “the wolves are going to find out that they’re now sheep” and suggested the committee members could face jail time “for the kinds of laws they’re breaking.”
