Kimberley Driscoll won the Democratic primary for lieutenant governor of Massachusetts on Tuesday.

The primary field in the deep-blue state included Driscoll, state Rep. Tami Gouveia, and state Sen. Eric Lesser.

Driscoll, who has been mayor of Salem since 2006, led the contest in polling in the final stretch of the race, according to a Sept. 1 survey from the University of Massachusetts Lowell Center for Public Opinion conducted at the end of August.

Little daylight separated the field on policy, and Attorney General Maura Healey, the Democratic gubernatorial nominee, did not endorse anyone in the race. Each sought to highlight aspects of their resumes, per NBC Boston. Driscoll touted her municipal experience, while Gouveia pointed to her roots in Lowell and background in social work and public health. Lesser, who is from the western part of the state, sought to highlight his work in communities outside Boston and its suburbs.

Meanwhile, the Republican field included former state Reps. Leah Cole Allen and Kate Campanale and largely mirrored the Republican gubernatorial primary. No major outlets had called the GOP primary as of 10:30 p.m. ET, although Allen led by multiple points.

Campanale ran in tandem with Republican businessman Chris Doughty, who had a centrist platform more in the vein of other recent Republican governors of the blue state, including outgoing Republican Gov. Charlie Baker.

Allen, meanwhile, ran alongside Republican Geoff Diehl, also a former state representative. Diehl was endorsed by former President Donald Trump and ran on a platform aligned with the ex-president, casting doubt on the 2020 election results without entirely embracing his baseless claims that the election was stolen from him.

Diehl won his party’s nomination Tuesday and will face Healey in November in a race Democrats are projected to win.
