As Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) said he plans to send more illegal immigrants to "sanctuary cities," Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) wrote to the Department of Justice to try and stop him and Gov. As Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) said he plans to send more illegal immigrants to “sanctuary cities,” Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) wrote to the Department of Justice to try and stop him and Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX), who most recently sent busloads of immigrants to Vice President Kamala Harris’s Washington, D.C., home.

“In particular, I urge US DOJ to investigate whether the alleged fraudulent inducement would support charges of kidnapping under relevant state laws, which could serve as a predicate offense for charges under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization (RICO) provisions of the Organized Crime Control Act of 1970,” Newsom wrote to Attorney General Merrick Garland.

DeSantis was asked about Newsom’s letter at a news conference Friday.

“All I can say is, I think his hair gel is interfering with his brain function,” DeSantis said.

Later, on Twitter, former CBS News anchor and author Dan Rather suggested the two square off in a debate on CNN.

“Here’s an idea for Chris Licht, the new head of @CNN. Set up a debate — one-on-one — between @GavinNewsom and @RonDeSantisFL. Two governors of big states, potential presidential candidates. Prime time. Ratings I bet would be huge. Who would have the courage to show up?” Rather tweeted.

Newsom then took it a step further.

“Hey [DeSantis], clearly you’re struggling, distracted, and busy playing politics with people’s lives. Since you have only one overriding need — attention — let’s take this up & debate. I’ll bring my hair gel. You bring your hairspray. Name the time before Election Day,” Newsom wrote.

Christina Pushaw, spokeswoman for DeSantis, responded to Newsom.

“Thirst post all you want. You’re not getting those U-Hauls back,” she tweeted.

While it’s unclear whether DeSantis and Newsom will debate before the midterm elections, they could do so in the future. Both are considered possible presidential candidates in 2024.
