Former President Donald Trump told journalist Maggie Haberman that he thinks he would run for president in 2016 all over again, if given the choice, because he has “so many rich friends and nobody knows who they are.”
His “candid admission” was released as an excerpt in the Atlantic from Haberman’s upcoming book Confidence Man, which features a relatively recent interview with the former president. In the excerpt, Trump also discusses allegations that he took classified documents and what he liked best about being president. Haberman interjects several criticisms of him between his statements.
NEW YORK SUES TRUMP: OF COURSE IT’S POLITICALLY MOTIVATED
“The answer is, yeah, I think so. Because here’s the way I look at it. I have so many rich friends and nobody knows who they are.” He then went on to talk about how much easier his life would have been had he not run,” Haberman wrote about Trump when asked if he would have chosen to run for president again with the knowledge he has now.
“When I asked him in a later interview about what he’d liked about the job, he replied, ‘Getting things done,’ and listed a few accomplishments,” she added.
Trump beat Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election to become the 45th president. He lost to Joe Biden in 2020 and has heavily flirted with the idea of another run in 2024.
Haberman’s upcoming book, with the full title Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and the Breaking of America, does not paint a favorable picture of the former president, as the title implies. The interview featured in the excerpt is apparently only one of several interviews the New York Times journalist had with Trump.
