The storm surge resulting from Hurricane Ian is so intense that it seems to be bringing to life a long-running hoax about sharks being sent into residential areas by storms.

Storm watcher Colin McCarthy posted the remarkable video on Twitter, which appears to show a shark writhing around on a flooded city street in Fort Myers, Florida. Some shed doubt on the claim, saying the creature looks more like a tarpon, another large fish. Others flocked to make comparisons with the cult classic film Sharknado, which similarly features sharks combined with a natural disaster.

Social media hoaxes regarding sharks swimming into residential areas during natural disasters have become a staple of the internet. There have been several recent hurricane shark hoaxes and attempts to debunk them. Such hoaxes were peddled during 2020’s Hurricane Laura and 2017’s Hurricane Harvey.

Already having made a splash on the internet, the newest video may well trump skeptics in producing a real-life Sharknado-like scenario.
