New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge hit his 62nd home run of the season Tuesday, breaking the American League single-season record previously held by fellow Yankees outfielder Roger Maris.
Judge hit the home run with no one on base on the third pitch of the game against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.

The four-time MLB All-Star broke his tie with Maris, who set the AL record in 1961. It was the MLB single-season record for decades until the late 1990s. Barry Bonds now holds the MLB and National League record with 73 home runs.
Judge’s mark is now seventh overall for most home runs in a single season, trailing numbers posted by baseball greats Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, and Sammy Sosa. Bonds, McGwire, and Sosa all set their records during baseball’s infamous “steroid era,” when many stars were found to be using performance-enhancing drugs.

Among those who congratulated Judge on Tuesday was President Joe Biden. “History made, more history to make,” Biden said in a tweet.
The Yankees won the AL East and currently have a record of 99-61. They will play in the MLB postseason, which begins Friday.
