Paul Pelosi is “making steady progress” but faces a long recovery following a brutal attack by a home intruder last Friday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said in an update about her husband on Monday.
The speaker also voiced gratitude for the support Paul Pelosi, 82, and her family has received, including from the medical professionals who tended to his injuries.

“Since the horrific attack on Paul early Friday, we have been deluged with thousands of messages conveying concern, prayers, and warm wishes. We are most grateful,” Nancy Pelosi said in a statement. “Our family thanks everyone for their kindness.”
Police responded to their San Francisco residence around 2:30 a.m. local time following a 911 call, according to authorities. The alleged assailant, David DePape, 42, had asked for the speaker’s whereabouts and had been keen on breaking her kneecaps, according to interviews he did with authorities after his arrest. He also struck Paul Pelosi with a hammer before being detained, per police.
Nancy Pelosi, who was not in town at the time, rushed over to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital on Friday, where her husband received treatment, according to her office. Paul Pelosi underwent surgery to address a “skull fracture and serious injuries to his right arm and hands,” per a spokesperson for the speaker.
“Thanks to the excellent trauma care medical team at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, Paul is making steady progress on what will be a long recovery process,” Nancy Pelosi added in her statement Monday.
Both state and federal prosecutors rolled out a flurry of charges against DePape on Monday. He is expected to be arraigned Tuesday.

Federal prosecutors charged him with one count of attempted kidnapping of a U.S. official and one count of assault of an immediate family member of a U.S. official for his actions regarding Nancy and Paul Pelosi, respectively.
San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins unveiled charges of attempted murder, residential burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, false imprisonment of an elder, and threats to a public official against DePape.
Jenkins also revealed that she will petition to keep DePape detained without bail due to the severe public safety risks he poses. He faces up to life in prison.
