The White House opted to delete one of its tweets that was fact-checked by Twitter.

“Seniors are getting the biggest increase in their Social Security checks in 10 years through President Biden’s leadership,” the official account tweeted Tuesday.

A new feature of the platform, called “Community Notes,” added some context to the tweet after it was posted. Readers can now upload links for the platform’s approval to fact-check tweets and provide accurate information. It clarified that the large increase is “due to the annual cost of living adjustment, which is based on the inflation rate.”

When one user pointed out that the tweet from the White House had been fact-checked, new CEO Elon Musk responded with praises for the new feature.

“The community notes feature is awesome,” Musk wrote Wednesday. “Our goal is to make Twitter the most accurate source of information on Earth, without regard to political affiliation.”

President Joe Biden was also fact-checked via a community note over the weekend.

“Let me give you the facts,” Biden’s tweet read. “In 2020, 55 corporations made $40 billion. And they paid zero in federal taxes. My Inflation Reduction Act puts an end to this.”

A subsequent community note clarified that “out of the 55 corporations the tweet references, only 14 had earnings greater than $1 billion and would be eligible under Biden’s tax law.” The tweet remains despite the addition of the note.

Musk himself was also fact-checked shortly after becoming the platform’s CEO, in a tweet where he claimed he had nothing to do with the restoration of Kanye West’s account. The note clarified that West was never suspended, but simply restricted to a “read-only mode.”
