State Rep. Yadira Caraveo (D) defeated state Sen. Barbara Kirkmeyer (R) in the race for Colorado’s newly formed 8th Congressional District.
Caraveo won what was expected to be a close race for the seat, which has an even Cook Partisan Voting Index. The district covers much of the area between Denver and Fort Collins, including the cities of Brighton, Commerce City, and Thornton.
The suburban district, which voted for Joe Biden by 4.7 percentage points in 2020, was a key “toss-up” race this cycle. It has the largest Hispanic community of any of the districts in the Centennial State, making up 38.5% of the district’s population. Caraveo becomes the first Hispanic representative to represent Colorado in Congress.
