The chief of staff to New York Attorney General Letitia James resigned on Friday following a private investigation into sexual harassment allegations, James’s office said in a statement.

Ibrahim Khan, who served as James’s chief of staff for nearly a decade, was accused of inappropriate touching and unwanted kissing by at least one unnamed woman in October. An independent law firm was hired to investigate the accusations but found no official workplace misconduct.

“The office of attorney general has protocols in place to thoroughly investigate any allegation of misconduct,” a spokeswoman for James told the New York Times. “The office takes these matters with the utmost seriousness, and this situation is no different. An independent, impartial investigation was conducted, and the employee has since resigned.”

Khan has denied that his resignation had to do with the investigation, claiming he was already going to resign at the end of James’s first term as the state’s lead law enforcement officer. James was recently reelected to a second four-year term during the midterm elections last month.

“After a successful four-year term, I’ve been slated to leave the office for the private sector at the end of this year,” Khan told Bloomberg. “This is unrelated to an investigation, which nevertheless found no official workplace misconduct. I’m proud of all we have achieved over these past four years in serving New Yorkers.”

At least one other sexual harassment allegation has been made against Khan, with both allegations filed anonymously. However, neither accuser was a current employee, Bloomberg reported.

Khan first began working as a spokesman for James in 2013 during her campaign for New York City public advocate and was promoted to her chief of staff when she took office. Khan also served as James’s campaign manager when she ran for her first term as attorney general in 2018.

Khan remained James’s chief of staff during her investigation into sexual harassment allegations against then-Gov. Andrew Cuomo last year. The investigation determined at least 11 women had been sexually harassed by Cuomo during a seven-year period, and Cuomo resigned last August.
