One Fetterman wore a pair of shorts to Sen. John Fetterman’s (D-PA) swearing-in ceremony for the United States Senate Tuesday, but it was not the Fetterman most had come to expect.
Fetterman’s oldest son, 13-year-old Karl Fetterman, wore a pair of shorts to his father’s ceremony, prompting a joke from the newly elected senator.

“For those of you asking, yes, there will be a Fetterman in shorts today, but it’s not me,” the Pennsylvania Democrat tweeted with a photo of himself and his two sons.
A video following Fetterman’s official swearing-in ceremony confirmed that Karl Fetterman wore the shorts as shown in the image.
Fetterman is known for wearing shorts during more formal occasions, including when he met President Joe Biden in Pittsburgh last year.
He also wore shorts many times on the campaign trail and during press interviews. He has additionally been noted for pairing the shorts with large hoodies.
However, when arriving on Capitol Hill in November, Fetterman wore the suit and tie male members of Congress are required to wear on the floors of Congress. Women are expected to dress conservatively in skirts and blouses, dresses, slacks, or pantsuits.

The new members of the 118th Congress took their oaths at noon Tuesday on Capitol Hill before electing their new leadership. Democrats retained control of the Senate in the midterm elections in November, but Republicans flipped the House of Representatives with a 222-213 majority.
The House is currently in the process of electing its next speaker, with the GOP leaning toward Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA). However, McCarthy has failed to secure the position after two rounds. McCarthy needs a 218 majority to become the speaker.
