Actor Brian Cox of Succession fame went on the defensive for J.K. Rowling over her opinions on the issue of transgenderism.
Cox appeared on the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg show to discuss a new reform parliament passed in his home country of Scotland in December that helps ease the process for transgender people to receive their Gender Recognition Certificate.
During the conversation, the topic of Rowling’s views of transgenderism, criticized by many has transphobic, was brought up. Cox surprised host Kuenssberg by claiming he did not like to see how the author was treated because of her opinion.
“I think she’s entitled to her opinion, she’s entitled to say what she feels—as a woman she’s very much entitled to say what she feels about her own body, and there’s nobody better to say that as a woman,” Cox said. “So I do feel that people are being a bit high and mighty about their own attitude towards JK Rowling, quite frankly.”

The new regulation in Scotland will allow for those as young as 16 to receive their GRC. Despite his defense of Rowling, Cox applauded the change.
“I’m very proud of Scotland for doing the gender identification act because I think that’s long needed and it’s a debate that has to happen,” the actor said. “I do question the 16 thing but that’s my own personal feeling, but I do feel we need to address that and I think that’s absolutely right.”
Rowling first fell into hot water with the LGBT community when she took to Twitter to mock the phrase “people who menstruate,” and suggested to replace the phrase simply with “women.”
“I try to behave online as I would like others to behave,” Rowling said in 2022 of her Twitter presence since. “I’ve never threatened anyone.”
