Farmer Phil Tompkins called the supermarket prices for a half dozen eggs “nuts.”

EGG SMUGGLING INTO US SKYROCKETS AMID RISING PRICES

“At the store, it’s crazy. Half dozens may go for $5 and almost $10 for a dozen. It’s nuts,” he said.

While Americans have been scrambling to manage the rising costs of food, some have turned to getting their own chickens.

Phil and his wife, Jenn Tompkins, decided to create a business that would make the process of getting chickens simple for families.

Their business ‘Rent-the-Chicken’ is a one-stop shop for taking out the hassle of figuring out the right chicken coop, chicken food, and where to get the chickens and supplies. The rentable chicken coop is all included in a monthly rental fee and delivered to the customer’s backyard to help them get started.

“We will bring a portable chicken coop to your backyard with two-to-four egg-laying hens for a six-month rental,” Jenn Tompkins told Fox & Friends on Friday.

Phil Tompkins said this service is not limited to the types of people who can get the chickens.

“This is great for all people — empty nesters, people with kids, people without kids, people that are just looking for a change in their life,” the Rent-the-Chicken co-founder said.

In a tutorial video on their website, Phil explained that it is a myth chickens don’t like city living. He explained how their coop cages are designed to be sturdy enough to keep out other animals, including raccoons, cats, and dogs.

Tompkins said that the high egg prices have a lot to do with the cost of food, transportation, and amount of chickens laying eggs.

The couple has another program called “Hatch the Chicken” for families and schools to see “the progression of egg to chick without the commitment.” For people who fall in love with their chickens, they allow adoption options for the chickens.
