Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) warned President Joe Biden against “berating” Republicans in his State of the Union address, and he credited the GOP for the administration’s accomplishments.

Speaking ahead of Biden’s 2023 address, Manchin appeared on Fox News to urge the president to set a new course with Republicans. He went so far as to encourage Biden to thank Republicans for their help in the administration’s accomplishments.

“Reset it. Say today is a new day. Recalibrate,” he said.

“He could not have accomplished everything they’re taking credit for without our Republican friends for working with us. Take credit for that,” Manchin said.

“Don’t just berate people just because they happen to have a D or an R next to their name. That’s what America is sick and tired of,” he continued. “So he can set that. He’s the leader of the free world. Reset that tonight.”

Biden’s relationship with Republican members of Congress is at an all-time low. The president repeatedly condemned their “Ultra MAGA” agenda and painted them largely as extremists. Manchin has been characterized by his willingness to vote with Republicans on many issues — much to the ire of Biden and the Democratic Party’s progressive wing.

Manchin’s appeal for a friendly relationship with Republicans may also further hint at a possible presidential run, which he recently refused to rule out.
