White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre took multiple shots at Republicans on Thursday after citing a federal law that bars government employees from overt political campaigning.

A reporter asked about 2024 presidential candidate Nikki Haley‘s calls for older politicians to undergo mental competency tests, to which Jean-Pierre sharply defended President Joe Biden‘s record.

“I am covered by the Hatch Act, so I’m not going to speak to her directly and her comments specifically,” Jean-Pierre said, referring to the federal law that she frequently cites in response to questions.

She then lashed out at the GOP.

“We’ve heard these types of attacks before, if you go back to 2020, they said that the president couldn’t do it and attacked him there, and he beat them,” said Jean-Pierre.

Biden did the same in 2021, the press secretary argued, by turning around the economy, getting the pandemic under control, and passing the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan in the face of GOP attacks.

“In 2022, when everyone was talking about a red wave and saying that we were going to get another shellacking, if you will, the president beat them at their own game,” said Jean-Pierre. “Maybe they’re forgetting the wins that this president has had over the last couple of years. But I’m glad to remind them any time.”
