Whoopi Goldberg had a message for Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) at the beginning of Thursday’s episode of The View.

“Queer history is American history is black history,” Goldberg said. “There are black gay folks.”

She was responding to a protest against DeSantis’s blocking of Advanced Placement African American Studies in Florida schools, which Rev. Al Sharpton recently led.

“He wants to argue that Florida mandates teaching black history. It’s been mandated since 1994, but funding was never mandated,” she claimed. “It’s been poorly enforced. And 11 of 67 of Florida school districts are considered to be truly meeting the mandate. Most districts limit instruction on black history to Black History Month.”

Goldberg then accused the governor of cherry-picking the topics he wants to be taught.

“Ron, your own statute says students should learn to understand the ramifications of prejudice and racism,” Goldberg said. “But when you cherry-pick, and you decide what is going to be taught, it makes it hard for me to take you seriously because you’re saying, you know, queer black history isn’t black history.”

Joy Behar then noted DeSantis’s ivy league credentials, which include Yale University and Harvard Law School, saying, “He’s got a very good education. Now he doesn’t want anybody else to have it.”

According to Sunny Hostin, this is because “The less people know, the easier it is for those people to sort of gaslight them and snooker them.”

“I think what’s so offensive to me and, Whoopi, you kind of just alluded to it. Is that he only targeted African American A.P. studies,” she added.

Hostin then said that black people are the “very foundation of this country” and “we built this country for free.”

To this, Behar added, “he doesn’t want people to know that because it will make white people feel bad.”

“We want our reparations for it,” said Hostin.

Ana Navarro chimed in to say, “What this is all about is fanning the flames of grievance, of white grievance.”

Last month, the governor blocked the inclusion of an AP class on African American studies in high schools.

“If the course comes into compliance and incorporates historically accurate content, the Department will reopen the discussion,” Florida Education Department press secretary Cassie Palelis said told the Washington Examiner at the time.

Since it was announced, Democratic politicians and the White House have denounced DeSantis’s move.
