An attorney representing former President Donald Trump and his interactions with the government over presidential records taken to his Mar-a-Lago resort has hired a prominent lawyer based in Washington, D.C., to represent himself.
Michael Levy was hired by Trump attorney Evan Corcoran’s law firm, Silverman Thompson Slutkin & White, to represent Corcoran in the investigation, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters.
Corcoran already appeared before a grand jury last month in connection to special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into potential obstruction over the classified records taken to Trump’s Florida resort after the former president left office in 2021, a person with information about the appearance told the outlet.
PENCE SUBPOENAED BY SPECIAL COUNSEL OVERSEEING TRUMP INVESTIGATIONS
Reports that Corcoran hired Levy to represent him comes as the New York Times reported this week that prosecutors are seeking to interview Corcoran again and are asking a judge to peel back attorney-client privilege by arguing they discovered evidence of a crime.
Corcoran handled communications between the Justice Department and the National Archives last year as the government sought to bring back the records taken to Mar-a-Lago, according to documents attached in a lawsuit Trump filed last year seeking an independent review of the materials seized by the FBI at his resort.
A separate attorney for Trump, Christina Bobb, signed a certification that all classified documents had been returned before the FBI discovered around 100 additional classified records during an August 2022 search of the resort.
The former president has denied any wrongdoing, claiming without evidence that he declassified all the records found at Mar-a-Lago.
Levy and Corcoran worked together in the 1990s as federal prosecutors, and the newly hired attorney has been involved in several major cases during his career, such as representing Enron executives after the company’s 2001 implosion.

Corcoran, a Baltimore-based attorney, previously represented Trump’s former chief strategist Steve Bannon in a jury trial that found Bannon guilty of contempt of Congress. Corcoran has also represented other defendants related to the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.
