Alex Murdaugh was found guilty of murdering his wife and son Thursday evening, hours after the jury began deliberations.

The 28-day trial captured the country’s attention as the former attorney’s life was turned inside out in a quest to determine whether he killed his family to cover up his own financial misdeeds. Murdaugh also faces 99 charges and 19 indictments for financial crimes, of which, prosecutors argued, his wife and son had knowledge.

Murdaugh is the fourth generation of a family that ruled over South Carolina’s legal scene. The once-prominent legal scion testified in his own defense, telling the country about a battle with drug addiction and how he lied to investigators about where he was on the night of his family’s murders.

Despite a juror being dismissed on Wednesday for discussing the case before it concluded, the jury determined Murdaugh had the means and motive to kill his wife and son, and his lies about his whereabouts confirmed their suspicions.

Prosecutors said they will seek life without the possibility of parole for Murdaugh, and they will not seek the death penalty. Murdaugh also faces more than 700 years in jail for financial crimes if he’s found guilty of those charges.
