Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) has privately indicated that he plans to run for the 2024 Republican nomination for president, according to a Washington Post report published Thursday.
DeSantis, who has been tight-lipped about a presidential bid while the state’s legislature is still in session, is expected to make a formal announcement about the 2024 race during the summer. However, DeSantis is expected to visit the early-voting states of Iowa and Nevada over the weekend.

A super PAC founded by Ken Cuccinelli, who served as acting director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services under the Trump administration, was also created Thursday. The political action committee is expected to serve as an outside spending vehicle for DeSantis’s campaign, three unnamed sources told the Washington Post.
“Ron DeSantis doesn’t just talk — he acts, but most of all, he never backs down,” Cuccinelli said in a video announcing the Never Back Down Super PAC.
He continued, “Gov. DeSantis, today, I’m asking you to run for president. You’ve had our back; now we will have yours.”
Other sources have claimed that even though DeSantis says he has not decided on whether he will run for president, recent conversations have indicated otherwise, according to the outlet.

DeSantis is considered the strongest competitor to Trump in 2024, according to recent polling. DeSantis rose to prominence in the Republican Party after winning his gubernatorial election in 2018. During the 2022 midterm elections, he handily won reelection by nearly 19 percentage points.
DeSantis will appear in Davenport, Iowa, on Friday. He will be joined by Gov. Kim Reynolds (R-IA), who recently appeared at events for Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley, and Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC). The Florida governor will then appear in Las Vegas on Saturday with Adam Laxalt, the Republican nominee for Nevada’s U.S. Senate seat during the midterm elections. DeSantis is visiting the states as part of his promotional tour for his memoir.
