Despite Top Gun: Maverick receiving multiple Academy Award nominations, the box office’s No. 1 movie of 2022 only took home one award on Sunday.

The Top Gun sequel was nominated for six Oscars, including Best Picture at the 95th Academy Awards, but it only won the Oscar for Best Sound.

Tom Cruise did not attend the Oscars, choosing to skip the ceremony in favor of continuing to shoot Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part II, according to a report.

Cruise had received a nomination for Maverick as a producer in the Best Picture category alongside Christopher McQuarrie, David Ellison, and Jerry Bruckheimer.

While attending the Oscars luncheon last month, legendary director Steven Spielberg credited Cruise and his performance in Top Gun: Maverick with saving the film industry.

“You saved Hollywood’s a**,” Spielberg told Cruise during a brief encounter at the Oscar luncheon. “And you might have saved theatrical distribution.”

Despite multiple nominations for the Avatar sequel, it, too, only took home one award, its prize being for Best Visual Effects.
