Just 25% of Democrats want President Joe Biden to run for reelection next year, according to a new poll from Monmouth University released Monday.
The poll, which was conducted from March 16 to March 20 with a total of 542 Democratic respondents, found that only a quarter of them said they want Biden to run for reelection next year, while 44% of participants said Biden should step aside and let another Democrat run for president in 2024. The other roughly 30% said they had no preference.

For the 44% who wanted someone else to run for the Democratic nomination, Vice President Kamala Harris was the favorite to replace Biden, securing 13% of the vote. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) each received 6% of the vote. Another 4% voted for Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), and 3% chose Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA).
When it came to the likability of the current president, 74% of respondents said they had a favorable view of Biden, while just 14% said they had an unfavorable view.
Pollsters also asked participants to compare their preferred 2020 Democratic primary candidate to Biden. Of the respondents, 44% said they believed their candidate would have done better. But 46% guessed they would do the same as the current president. Only 9% believed their candidate would have done worse.

The poll comes as the 2024 race begins to take shape. Biden has yet to announce a bid for a second term, but he is expected to do so soon. On the Republican side, only former President Donald Trump, former Gov. Nikki Haley (R-SC), and technological entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy have announced their bids for the Republican ticket so far.
The poll’s margin of error was 6.3 percentage points.
