Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) blasted the indictment of former President Donald Trump by the Manhattan district attorney’s office as “political theater.”
“This is less about the crime and more about the target. So, it has to play out. This is kind of set in motion,” the Louisiana senator told Fox News Sunday. “But on the other hand, where I think this particular problem is it’s going to lead to all kind of political theater.”
BILL BARR CALLS TRUMP INDICTMENT AN ‘ABUSE OF THE PROSECUTIVE FUNCTION’
He added, “Theater that is going to distract from addressing the issues that are incredibly important to our country right now, that are not about just one person or somebody running for reelection as a D.A. in New York, but rather about the future of our country, whether it’s Social Security, inflation, crime on the streets.”
“We’ve got major issues that are affecting family gathered around the kitchen table and this distracts from that discussion from the urgency of addressing those issues,” Cassidy said.
Cassidy joins other Republicans calling Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s actions in the case against the former president “politically motivated.”
Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) similarly slammed Braggs’s case as “weak” and politically motivated on Sunday.
“You don’t have to be a lawyer to look at this case and think it’s on pretty weak grounds,” Crenshaw said on CNN’s State of the Union. “This is just very clearly a very weak case.”
Former Attorney General Bill Barr joined Fox News Sunday earlier in the show and called Bragg’s decision an “abuse of the prosecutive function, which is pursuing a person rather than pursuing a real crime.”
Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) called the indictment a “very sad time for America” but hoped lawmakers would still “come together” to “do our job,” while speaking on NBC’s Meet the Press.

Former Gov. Chris Christie (R-NJ) criticized the indictment being brought against Trump but called the Trump’s team’s reaction all “bravado” and “bologna.”
“All this bravado from the Trump camp is bologna. He’s going to be charged officially on Tuesday. He’s going to have to be mugshotted, fingerprinted, and he’s going to face a criminal trial in Manhattan, and he’s not going to be able to avoid it. You can’t make that a good day under any circumstances,” Christie said on ABC’s This Week.
