Since the start of the month, there have been at least 15 mass shootings in the United States, according to data compiled by the Gun Violence Archive, and 146 mass shootings since the beginning of 2023.
Sturgeon critically injured Officer Nickolas Wilt, 26, who had just graduated from a police training academy and was on his fourth shift as an officer. Wilt and two other officers responded to the active shooting incident, and Wilt was shot in the head. He remains sedated and is in critical condition.
Here is what is known about the five deceased victims of Monday’s mass shooting.
Joshua Barrick
Barrick, 40, was killed on Monday. He served as the senior vice president of commercial real estate at Old National Bank for less than a year.
He worked for almost two decades in banking and worked at WesBanco before moving to Old National in August 2020, per the Courier-Journal. He was named one of the “20 People to Know in Banking” by Louisville Business First in 2020.
Barrick was also an active member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and coached basketball for first and second graders at the church’s grade school.
“Josh was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, and friend,” his brother, Jeff Barrick, said in a statement via ABC News. “He would do anything for anyone and cherished his time with them. He had a wonderful sense of humor, was sentimental, and was passionate about life.”
“His involvement with Holy Trinity gave him a sense of purpose and community. He will be missed by all that knew him,” the statement said.
Deana Eckert
Eckert, 57, was the fifth person to die from the shooting. Her death was announced Monday night after she succumbed to her wounds in the hospital.
Eckert was an Old National Bank employee, Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg said on Tuesday.
“I knew Deana,” Greenberg said. “Deana was a very kind and very thoughtful person. She was a wonderful woman who will be missed. Her death means another family in mourning and adds yet another layer of tragedy to this moment.”
Thomas Elliott
Elliott, 63, who was killed on Monday, was referred to as a “very good friend” and “close friend” of both Greenberg and Gov. Andy Beshear (D-KY).
“This is awful. I have a very close friend that didn’t make it today, and I have another close friend who didn’t, either. And one who’s at the hospital that I hope is going to make it through,” Beshear said at a press conference Monday.
“Tommy Elliot helped me build my law career, helped me become governor, gave me advice on being a good dad,” the governor continued. “One of the people I talk to most in the world and very rarely were we talking about my job.”
Rep. Morgan McGarvey (D-KY), who represents Louisville, knew Elliott for years and said, “It’s unimaginable to me that he’s not here.”
“He enjoyed life,” McGarvey said. “He enjoyed people. He enjoyed being in the mix. He enjoyed trying to get stuff done to move Louisville and Kentucky forward. He was serious about it, but he had fun with it.”
Elliott was also friends with Lonnie Ali, the wife of the late boxing champion Muhammad Ali.
“Tommy was such a warm, wonderful, funny, kind guy,” she said. “Just the sweetest person. And it’s just such a huge loss, not just to his friends and family, but to the community. Because that’s what Tommy was about. Tommy was about community.”
“I’m going to miss him so much,” she added.
Juliana Farmer
Farmer, 45, was killed in the mass shooting at the bank, where she worked as a loan officer.
She was a mother and a grandmother, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader.
“What am I supposed to do now,” J’yeon Christopher Chambers said on Facebook. Chambers is Farmer’s son, according to the local outlet. “They took my f****** mommmmm!!!!!!!!!!”
Brentney Owsley, a friend of Farmer’s, posted tributes to Farmer on Facebook on Monday.
“The best mom, the best friend, the best grandma the best listener,” she said of Farmer. “This is the worst day of my life.”
James Tutt
Tutt, 64, one of the victims of the mass shooting at the bank, worked in banking for over 38 years, per the Lexington Herald-Leader.
