Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) criticized President Joe Biden’s “screwed up” foreign policy following French President Emmanuel Macron’s calls for “strategic autonomy” in Europe.

“Stunning. Even the left-wing leaders of Europe — whom Biden has assiduously courted (and obsequiously a**-kissed) — are openly screwing the U.S.,” Cruz tweeted, linking to an article on the controversy.

POMPEO BLASTS MACRON FOR GIVING CHINA A ‘PROPAGANDA VICTORY’

Macron stoked ire from the United States by calling for European “strategic autonomy” and appearing to diminish Washington’s policy on Taiwan. His comments came against the backdrop of a three-day trip to China last week in which he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

“The paradox would be that, overcome with panic, we believe we are just America’s followers,” Macron told Politico. “The question Europeans need to answer … is it in our interest to accelerate [a crisis] on Taiwan? No. The worse thing would be to think that we Europeans must become followers on this topic and take our cue from the U.S.”

A chorus of U.S. politicians blasted Macron’s statements, taking note of the decades of American support given to Europe, most recently in the war in Ukraine.

Prior to the start of the war in Ukraine, he called for a European proposal that would be shared “with our allies” before then being submitted to Russia, seemingly casting the U.S. aside. Macron has also long sounded the alarms of European dependency on the U.S. for security and seemingly sought to mold Europe into a third global superpower alongside China and the U.S.

“Serious Q: Could Biden possibly have screwed up foreign policy more?” Cruz said.

Biden spoke with Macron earlier this month and hosted him for a state visit last year. White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby downplayed Macron’s comments this week, stressing the “terrific bilateral cooperation” between the two countries.

“We’re focused on … making sure that together we’re meeting the national security requirements of both countries,” Kirby said.

Macron departed for the Netherlands on Tuesday for a two-day stop. Biden traveled to Northern Ireland on Tuesday for a four-day trip.
