Top Gun: Maverick is Tom Cruise’s top-grossing film domestically as it approaches $300 million in total earnings with a record-setting second box office weekend.
The sequel garnered $25 million Friday, bringing earnings to $230 million.
Maverick is expected to tally $85 million by the weekend’s end for a total of $290 million in domestic earnings — good enough for the smallest decline ever among movies that earned $100 million in their opening weekend.

Top Gun: Maverick, which has garnered an array of positive reviews, became Cruise’s top-performing film domestically Saturday. Previously, Cruise’s best domestic openings included the 2005 War of the Worlds with $243.3 million, not adjusted for inflation, and 2018’s Mission: Impossible — Fallout with $220.2 million.
