White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre subtly shook off criticism Thursday leveled by Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) at President Joe Biden’s strategy for addressing the debt limit.
Manchin claimed in a statement Thursday morning that Biden was showing a “deficiency of leadership” in failing to meet with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and negotiate a “compromise” on the debt ceiling.

“The responsibility to make sure that we do not default, it sits in the hands of Congress, and right now, it is up to Speaker McCarthy and the ‘MAGA’ wing of the Republican conference,” she told reporters when asked if Biden bore any responsibility in avoiding a national default. “It is up to them to get this done. They are wasting time, and I’ve already laid out what they did propose, how much that’s going to hurt American families who are trying to make ends meet.”
Earlier in the briefing, Jean-Pierre reiterated that Congress is “risking” U.S. credit with “dangerous” political “stunts.”

“These are political stunts that will have long-lasting effects,” she declared. “This is their constitutional duty. We should not have to negotiate on this. We should not be doing this with conditions. They were able to do this three times under the last administration, a Republican administration.”
