Former Georgetown Law professor Ilya Shapiro announced he will become the director of constitutional studies at the Manhattan Institute, a conservative policy group, one day after his resignation from the university.

“I’m going to stay in the D.C. area in northern Virginia where I live,” Shapiro told Fox News host Tucker Carlson on Tuesday, one day after Georgetown reinstated the constitutional law professor from his administrative leave for posting tweets criticizing President Joe Biden’s vow to nominate a black woman to the Supreme Court.

Shapiro recounted his resignation letter before announcing his next career move, rebuking the school for suspending him from his professorship over a “tweet that I didn’t phrase as well as I would have liked.”

“I think it was unreasonable or with bad faith to read it as being misogynistic or racist,” Shapiro said of Georgetown’s investigation into since-deleted tweets he posted in January.

The university placed Shapiro on paid leave days before he was set to assume his new position as the executive director of the Center for the Constitution at Georgetown Law.

“It’s ironic that I’m being criticized, that I was criticized, that I was put under investigation for criticizing Joe Biden for applying a racial and gender-based test for his Supreme Court nominees,” Shapiro added.

When the diversity office cleared Shapiro to resume his professorship last week, it ruled on a technicality due to the tweets in question being posted before his work began at the law school.

“It took them four months to see that I was not an employee when I tweeted, and they cleared me on that but insinuated that I or anybody else who said or wrote anything that would offend anyone would be creating a hostile educational establishment,” Shapiro said, adding that he could not operate under such rules.

Shapiro claimed there was a “nationwide” dilemma impacting institutions, saying that at Georgetown “specifically there are a lot of cowardly administrators who refuse to stand up to the activist radical woke mob who insists that there is no deviation from a progressive orthodoxy.”

He lauded his new work at the Manhattan Institute, a nonprofit think tank he called a “terrific organization making valuable counterintuitive policy points and home to many friends.”
