Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) dismissed a travel advisory issued for Florida by the NAACP on Wednesday when he answered a question in a Twitter Space announcing the launch of his presidential campaign.

Following his presidential announcement, DeSantis took questions from listeners, one of which inquired about a recent travel advisory issued by the NAACP for all nonwhite people, alleging a hostile environment in Florida. The Florida governor dismissed the advisory as ridiculous.

“Are you kidding me?” DeSantis began.

He went on to allege hypocrisy on the part of the NAACP for only issuing a travel advisory for his state and not states or cities where crime is much worse. The new presidential candidate touted his state’s record on crime and dismissed the advisory as a political hit job.

DeSantis also claimed that several board members of the NAACP had enjoyed “Florida vacations where they seem to be having an awful good time.”

The travel advisory was issued on Sunday, partially in response to a Florida bill that banned public colleges and universities in the state from allotting money to diversity, equity, and inclusion programs.

The advisory was issued on the NAACP Board of Directors’ decision. The travel advisory claims that his “so-called leadership” has made the state hostile to all nonwhite and LGBT people.

NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson painted the fight as existential in nature, accusing DeSantis of threatening democracy and the “democratic ideals that our union was founded upon.” He invited others to join the NAACP in “the battle for the soul of our nation.”

The Florida governor had previously dismissed the advisory as “a joke.”

“Yeah, we’ll see, we’ll see how effective that is,” he added.
