Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL) brought claims of 2020 election fraud to MSNBC on Wednesday but was denied an opportunity to go “toe to toe” to debate the subject.

It was a rare occurrence on the cable news network for such claims, widely rejected by the courts and elections officials, to receive air time. The congressman even challenged Chris Hayes to a debate on the matter, an invitation the host rejected.

“If you want to spend a lot of time debating that subject, I’ll take you on toe to toe,” Brooks said after Hayes flatly rejected the congressman’s stated belief that the 2020 contest was “stolen” from former President Donald Trump as “wrong.”

“There is truly nothing in this world I want less,” Hayes said before thanking Brooks and ending the interview.

The exchange took place one day before the Capitol riot panel’s first prime-time hearing. Brooks is one of the GOP lawmakers who has refused to cooperate with a subpoena from the Jan. 6 committee.

Brooks got involved in plans to challenge the certification of the 2020 election results on Jan. 6 but more recently said he drew Trump’s “ire” when he told the former president his request to “rescind” President Joe Biden’s victory, immediately reinstate Trump in the White House, and hold a new special election was not a legal proposition. Before Brooks said this in March, Trump withdrew his endorsement of the congressman in the Alabama Senate race.
