Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) shared his thoughts on the recent Supreme Court ruling on affirmative action in an interview with Salena Zito.
DeSantis predicted this decision “may open the door” for corporations to follow suit, and make hiring efforts based on merit over race. In fact, General Electric, JetBlue Airways, and Google filed a brief with the Supreme Court in the Students for Fair Admissions case, which read that undoing affirmative action could mean losing “a pipeline of highly qualified future workers and business leaders” and future struggles meeting diversity goals.

“Well, I think the idea that we should treat students based on race rather than merit violates the law and the constitution,” DeSantis said. “I think this decision may open the door for more equal treatment in Corporate America because I think Corporate America divvies up based on race.”
DeSantis, as a Harvard alumnus himself, claimed that while universities might have attempted diversity in race, there is growing conformity in thought. The governor expressed his pride in his state doing away with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion practices in its schools.

“Look, we’ve got to focus on merit, focus on achievement. There’s so many things that can unite us. When you elevate things that divide, that’s not healthy for society,” DeSantis went on. “And so I think this whole project of trying to kind of socially engineer a superficial diversity has not worked.”
DeSantis also celebrated the court’s ruling against President Joe Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan, as it has been part of his platform to have universities be responsible for defaulted debt.
