National Parks Service National Mall spokesperson Mike Litterest sat down with the Washington Examiner’s Christy Matino to share the agenda, performances, and parades to be expected on Tuesday.

US TO HOLD MORE THAN 180 CITIZENSHIP CEREMONIES OVER FOURTH OF JULY HOLIDAY

The first event will be the Smithsonian Folklife Festival at 11:00 a.m. between Seventh Street and 14th Street. Even if you don’t catch it first thing, it will actually be ongoing until 7:30 p.m.

Next, at 11:45 a.m. the Independence Day Parade begins on Seventh Street and Constitution Avenue. It is complete with floats, bands, military marches, and balloons. Litterest suggested those who want to participate come prepared with sun screen and water to combat the heat.

“You know, you don’t want your day ruined by having to deal with a heat illness,” Litterest said.

Then, the Capitol Fourth Concert will be at 8:00 p.m. on the west lawn of the US Capitol. The master of ceremonies will be America’s Funniest Home Videos host Alfonso Rivera, who will introduce acts such as Chicago, Boys II Men, the Muppets, and Belinda Carlisle. Additionally the National Symphony Orchestra will play. PBS will broadcast it in its entirety.

Finally the fireworks display will start at 9:09 and last 17 and a half minutes. While the fireworks are ignited from both sides of the Mall’s reflecting pool, the fireworks can be seen for miles around.

Litterest reminded attendees to the celebrations that the mall will be fenced from 14th Street to the Lincoln Memorial. He recommends that people metro into the heart of the city.

“You certainly don’t want to drive with the expectations you’re gonna be able to park anywhere near the National Mall,” Litterest said.
